All About the Types of Contacts
We are dedicated to keeping our patients well informed. This is the best way to ensure that you’ll be able to make an educated purchase that will leave you feeling satisfied with the contact lenses you choose. Here are the basic facts about soft vs. hard lenses:
Soft Contact Lenses
As the most popular type of lenses on the market, soft contacts are comfortable and effective at correction many vision conditions. They usually stay in place well and conform to the shape of your eye. People with a very active lifestyle appreciate the flexible material that doesn’t easily dislodge. Nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia can all be treated with soft lenses.
A range of soft contact lenses is available in our Southlake store, such as disposable, daily wear and extended wear contact lenses:
- Daily disposables are used only for the day and discarded at night, so they never need disinfecting. Monthly and weekly disposables are also an option.
- Daily wear lenses are worn during the day and taken out at night. Generally the most inexpensive type, they must be disinfected and rinsed.
- Extended wear contacts can stay on your eyes while you sleep. Usually worn for a week at a time, they require weekly sterilization. There is an increased risk of infection with these lenses.
Hard Contact Lenses
Depending upon your vision condition, rigid gas permeable lenses may grant crisper eyesight than soft lenses. When handled and cared for correctly, durable hard contacts can last a few years. Most brands of hard lenses must be removed nightly and sterilized. With a breathable composition, your risk of eye infections is decreased.
In contrast to soft lenses, which are generally comfortable from the first moment they are worn, hard contacts can take up to a week to get used to. In addition, they have a greater tendency to slip away from the middle of your eye. If you have questions about hard lenses and whether or not they’re suitable for your needs, please contact our Southlake office for an appointment.
